The Associated Press seeks an experienced news producer with a track record of strong video storytelling to work on our global output of daily video, to be based in Washington, D.C. In this role, you will work closely with the video production team and collaborate with global AP staff across formats to deliver engaging journalism that serves our customers and helps grow AP’s audience. This is a staff position covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the deputy director of video production, you will be a key participant in the production of our digital video content used by AP customers who rely on us to cover stories anywhere in the world. You’ll edit story elements creatively to produce strong visual narratives for a digital audience; exercise excellent news judgment when making editorial decisions; and write relevant storylines and shot lists with speed and accuracy. You will be expected to edit breaking news videos from live feeds, on deadline. In addition, the job requires using social media as a newsgathering tool. Familiarity with visual verification techniques is a plus. You must have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
We’re looking for someone who:
- has a keen interest in global news, demonstrating strong news judgment and innovative storytelling skills that appeal to digital audiences. You can communicate and drive stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
- thrives in a breaking news environment with a history of delivering success on deadline.
- has strong writing skills in English, with the ability to write to pictures clearly and succinctly.
- demonstrates strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
- pursues innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while consistently maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
- Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
- Advanced-level professional competency in non-linear video editing is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Superior production and technical editing skills with Adobe Premiere or a similar program. Familiarity with Adobe After Effects is a plus.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
- Experience working with developers, external customers and partners is a plus.

This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $52,046 and $82,934 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location.
