Why this role matters:

The Associated Press seeks a photo assistant to join its AP Elections team. This position on our Elections News team is a nine-month temporary position based in Washington, D.C., although exceptional candidates in other locations will be considered. It is covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.

 

What you will do:

  • Reporting to the Elections News Editor, you will research, secure and prepare for publication rights-cleared photos of candidates to national and selected statewide office.
  • Work among a team of reporters, photographers and editors to deliver a defined suite of photos of candidates for U.S. Congress, Governor, Lt. Governor, Secretary of State and Attorney General.
  • Acquire third-party content, vet its authenticity and secure permission for publication from the copyright owner.

 

Who you are (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least one year of experience as a photographer or editor at a college publication, daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau.
  • The ability to work in the U.S. or the ability to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a second language is a plus.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in photography and/or photo editing.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to pursue missing coverage elements, often under the pressures of breaking news and imminent deadlines.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and respond to feedback in a productive manner as a member of a diverse team of colleagues across all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • Technical skills in photography and photo editing, including a sharp sense of photo composition, digital image editing, writing and editing accurate and informative captions.

  • Strong news judgment, as AP photo assistants are expected to be as familiar with the top news stories of the day and basic elements of what makes for a good photograph.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on a variety of complex, challenging story lines.

Salary & Benefits:

This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for a minimum annual salary for Class B staff of between $40,108.12 and $66,114.88, based on location and years of professional experience. Additional compensation is negotiable based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. The Associated Press offers comprehensive benefits, which include:
