Company: Associated Press

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a journalist with a history of successful video and multimedia storytelling. Reporting to video leadership, with ties to AP’s revenue arm, this video producer will help facilitate video stories involving academics explaining their research on climate and other topics. This is a temporary grant-funded assignment lasting for two years, with an opportunity to extend.

Responsibilities: In this role, you will collaborate with a network of universities in the production of video explainers, commentary and analysis of U.S. and global issues for AP’s video customers and platforms on topics close to the news, such as climate change and the state of U.S. democracy. You will work to identify emerging stories and themes, and you’ll help collaborating universities understand and consider these themes for short videos of scholars speaking to specific news issues, to be distributed by AP. Your work will include ingesting university videos and distributing them to AP’s customer network. The preferred location for this position is New York or Washington, but we will consider other U.S. cities with an AP bureau.

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • consistently generate distinctive ideas for scholarly videos.
  • develop new workflows for the production of these stories and implement this system.
  • coordinate production of this content and give appropriate training and feedback to universities in line with AP requirements and standards.
  • work closely with colleagues to track metrics and usage of video content and communicate with AP customers.
  • have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with AP journalists, universities and academics on areas of interest.
  • conceptualize and implement creative video projects, and communicate stories that people will want to share and talk about on social media and other digital platforms.
  • pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

Qualifications: Candidates must possess technical skills in the creation of video and multimedia content, as well as the ability to work within an all-formats team to apply those skills from start to finish on breaking news and short- and long-term projects. You should be creative, innovative and agile and work effectively in a deadline-driven, dynamic and competitive newsroom environment. Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, including the ability to prioritize work, are a must. Applicants should have at least three years of full-time news experience as a video or multimedia journalist at a broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, newspaper or an AP bureau or regional desk.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in non-linear editing, preferably with Adobe Premiere.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $66,657 - $80,817 contingent on experience and other job-related factors.  Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.

Application deadline is January 27, 2023 11:59 p.m. (ET)
