The Associated Press seeks a Software Engineer to develop next generation technology with which the AP can deliver multimedia news to its customers with speed, accuracy, efficiency and completeness.  The software engineer will develop APIs and back-end services that will help provide the best user experience for AP customers.


Our APIs need to handle massive amounts of data and they feed thousands of AP customers news content daily and in real time. We need a software engineer who brings fresh ideas to the whole user experience and will develop effective solutions that address ease of use, high performance, large-scale system design, security, information retrieval, natural language processing, among others.


 We need a sharp and self-motivated developer with strong programming fundamentals and deep AWS experience who can immediately start working on API applications deployed in AWS.  The Software Engineer will apply proven coding, analytical and problem-solving skills to produce world class software solutions.  The engineer will design, develop, test, deploy, maintain, and enhance software solutions, and deliver solutions to meet project deadlines and priorities in an agile development environment.


 Reports to the Director of Software Development. 


Technical Environment:

 AWS (Lambda, S3, SNS/SQS, EC2, DynamoDB) Python, Elastic Cache, API Gateway, Cloud Front, MongoDB, Cognito, DevOps, Jenkins, CI/CD tools, GIT



  • Design, develop and test software applications, apis, services, interfaces, and enhancements to existing applications used by AP customers to search for and discover ap’s various sets of content.
  • Collaborate with the development director, program manager and other development team members to plan feature development for new releases.
  • Conduct code reviews and participate in reviews of other team members’ code.  Review test plans for new features.
  • Document code thoroughly.



  • Four-year university degree in Computer Science/Engineering or at least 7 years of job-related experience specifically in the technical environment specified above.
  • Experience in writing code for APIs hosted in an AWS environment, knowledge of AWS Power tools and Serverless application model (SAM).
  • Thorough understanding of protocols like HTTP/S, Websockets, TCP/UDP, SSL and web technologies.
  • Knowledge of Domain Driven Design concepts and microservices.
  • Experience with cloud administration/management on Amazon Web Services (Cloud Front, Cloud Watch, EBS, EC2, ELB, SNS, SQS, VPC).
  • Experience with implementing system security and hardening.
  • Demonstrated experience with DEVOPS automation processes and methodologies using tools such as Puppet, Jenkins, TFS, GIT and Containerization are required.
  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft SQL Server, DynamoDB, MongoDB
  • Knowledge of ASP.NET, C#, Angular.
  • Experience designing RESTful web services.
  • Coordinate and contribute to architectural and design discussions.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Good project & time management skills.
  • Ability to communicate ideas in both technical and user-friendly language.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed, with keen attention to detail.
  • Proven analytical and creative problem-solving abilities.
  • Able to prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.


Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required. Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.


The anticipated salary range for this position is $120,000 - $140,000 - contingent on experience and other job-related factors.  Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
