The Associated Press seeks a talented, versatile journalist with excellent news judgment and broad knowledge of U.S. and global affairs to join its Global Religion team, handling a mix of text editing duties and original reporting. In this role, you will be part of a news gathering and editing team that manages content from the Religion team’s reporters in the U.S. and Mexico, as well as religion-themed enterprise stories from AP reporters abroad. This is a two-year temporary position and may be based in any U.S. city with an AP office.
Responsibilities: As a text editor, you will collaborate closely with reporters to fact check and improve their copy on breaking news and enterprise. You will monitor other outlets for breaking news and trending topics, coordinating with Religion team leaders and other teams and format leaders to ensure that the AP covers any major religion news in a timely fashion. The Religion team’s flow of incoming copy varies widely, and there will be days when time for original reporting is available. We anticipate that the resulting stories often will be in-depth features, with extensive latitude on the topics to be covered.
Qualifications: As an editor and reporter, you are a journalist able to explain complex stories in clear and compelling ways, and you do so swiftly and accurately on tight deadlines. You have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate across formats and edit stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms. You're comfortable working from the field and from the desk, editing and reporting on breaking news as well as beat-driven enterprise.
You must be able to work effectively as a member of a team and with colleagues reporting in formats beyond text. As an AP journalist, you’ll also have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends as coverage demands.
Other qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as three years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
- All applicants must be able to work in the assigned location or be able to gain permission to do so.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
- Basic proficiency in using an iPhone for photos and video is required. Advanced proficiency is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
The anticipated salary range for this position is $72,364 - $90,000 contingent on experience and other job-related factors. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
