The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a talented, versatile journalist with excellent news judgment and broad knowledge of U.S. and global affairs to join its Global Religion team, handling a mix of text editing duties and original reporting. In this role, you will be part of a news gathering and editing team that manages content from the Religion team’s reporters in the U.S. and Mexico, as well as religion-themed enterprise stories from AP reporters abroad. This is a two-year temporary position and may be based in any U.S. city with an AP office.

Responsibilities: As a text editor, you will collaborate closely with reporters to fact check and improve their copy on breaking news and enterprise. You will monitor other outlets for breaking news and trending topics, coordinating with Religion team leaders and other teams and format leaders to ensure that the AP covers any major religion news in a timely fashion. The Religion team’s flow of incoming copy varies widely, and there will be days when time for original reporting is available. We anticipate that the resulting stories often will be in-depth features, with extensive latitude on the topics to be covered.

Qualifications: As an editor and reporter, you are a journalist able to explain complex stories in clear and compelling ways, and you do so swiftly and accurately on tight deadlines. You have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate across formats and edit stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms. You're comfortable working from the field and from the desk, editing and reporting on breaking news as well as beat-driven enterprise.

You must be able to work effectively as a member of a team and with colleagues reporting in formats beyond text. As an AP journalist, you’ll also have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends as coverage demands.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

Other qualifications:

The anticipated salary range for this position is $72,364 - $90,000 contingent on experience and other job-related factors.  Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.

Application deadline is January 30, 2023 11:59 p.m. (ET)
