The Associated Press seeks a talented photo editor to join its new global and environment team, based in New York or London.


Responsibilities: Reporting to the global climate and environment news director, this photo editor will be a self-starter with a deep interest in climate and biodiversity who can edit images and visual stories that resonate globally as part of a dynamic operation that works closely with other AP journalists to ensure the cooperative’s photos are accurate, distinctive and packaged creatively for audiences around the world. This position requires strong picture judgment and news judgment, as AP photo editors are expected to be as familiar with the top news stories of the day as they are with the basic elements of a good photograph. It also requires creativity and the ability to work with photographers of varying levels around the world to get the absolute best pictures for each story. Many climate stories are naturally visual, whereas others are data-driven or based on important announcements from world leaders or scientific reports. This photo editor must have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.


The successful candidate will:


  • have a demonstrated history of success as a news photographer or photo editor, with a record of creating and/or editing compelling visual journalism on deadline.
  • work among a team of reporters, photographers and editors to deliver spot news, sports and enterprise imagery that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
  • have strong communication skills and the ability to provide timely and constructive feedback to photographers and editors in the field with regards to successful or missing coverage elements, often under the pressures of breaking news and imminent customer deadlines.
  • the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of colleagues across all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
  • pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.


Qualifications: This photo editor must have demonstrated excellence as a visual journalist, with a record of delivering complex visual stories swiftly and accurately on tight deadlines. A strong set of technical skills are required, including a sharp sense of photo composition, digital image editing, writing and editing accurate and informative captions, and transmitting images swiftly. Applicants should have at least 5 years of full-time experience as a photographer or editor at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.


Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or the U.K, or be able to gain permission to work in the U.S or U.K.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a second language is a plus.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in photography and/or photo editing.
  • An interest in video is a must, as is willingness to experiment with video and different forms of presentation.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on a variety of complex, challenging story lines.
