The Associated Press seeks a talented journalist to write and edit fact-checking and news verification stories as a newsperson, based in Phoenix. 


Reporting to a news verification news editor, this person will identify and fact-check false and misleading information and visuals, including material that is circulating widely online, and produce stories that correct the record on deadline. The successful candidate must have the ability to report and write breaking news stories, and to edit the work of others, with a demonstrated record of excellence in both roles. The person in this position will be comfortable investigating questionable material across multiple media formats and must have an understanding of forensic tools that will help AP understand how misinformation is spreading online, whether it has been manipulated or altered and who is behind it. This newsperson must have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation. 


The successful candidate will: 

  • have a strong understanding of how misinformation travels online and the ability to surface and detect false and misleading content.  
  • have demonstrated expertise in fact-checking questionable information and visuals using as well as traditional reporting techniques.  
  • work among a team of reporters and editors to deliver facts-focused reporting that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.  
  • have a history of successful work as an editor, with the ability to assess information quickly, coach reporters through assignments and edit text stories to a high standard of quality.  
  • have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with AP journalists who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics. 
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share and engage with on social media and other platforms. 
  • pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity. 

Qualifications: This newsperson must have demonstrated excellence as a reporter and editor on a complex and challenging beat, with an established record of delivering exclusive, enlightening and distinctive stories. Applicants must have expertise in digital verification tools and methods used to fact-check misleading information across multiple formats. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with colleagues and peers and should have at least three years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.  

Other qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory. 
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus. 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
