Why this role matters 

This role plays a critical part in helping to build and lead new 24/7 global production hub for video. The assistant director will drive operational excellence, establish efficient and scalable workflows, and foster a culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement. They will be responsible for managing staff and resources, setting clear priorities, and ensuring timely video production while maintaining AP's high standards of integrity, accuracy and visual storytelling. They will line-manage a share of the global production team and be the senior production lead during Asia business hours. Based in Noida, India, this position reports to the Executive Producer, Global Video Production. 

 

What you will do 

In this senior editorial role, you will help build and lead a new 24/7 global production hub for video. This will include overseeing production workflows, establishing daily priorities and making swift decisions to adapt to changing demands in a fast-paced news environment. You will help optimize efficiency across the video production operation, ensuring timely content delivery that aligns with AP’s digital-first strategy, and maintaining high standards in scripts, edits and visual storytelling across all video formats. 

 

You will also: 

  • Serve as the senior production leader during India business hours, providing operational and editorial oversight across the video production team and acting as a primary escalation point for production, workflow and staffing issues. 

  • Lead a team of video producers and editors to produce high-quality, engaging and accurate video content, championing storytelling that aligns with AP's digital-first strategy. 

  • Ensure content is produced and delivered quickly and efficiently, particularly during breaking news events where speed and accuracy are essential. 

  • Oversee the prioritization of content production and ensure it is adjusted as news developments unfold. 

  • Maintain consistency and quality across video editing, scripting and storytelling, including breaking news coverage, explainers, reporter dispatches, first-person accounts and other edited video formats. 

  • Provide editorial guidance on story angles, production approaches and audience-focused storytelling. 

  • Foster a culture of creativity, collaboration and continuous development. 

  • Implement innovative production techniques, workflows and technologies, including AI-enabled tools, to improve efficiency and effectiveness. 

  • Collaborate closely with journalists across text, photo, video, social, graphics and interactive teams to maximize the reach and impact of AP journalism. 

  • Safeguard AP's standards of accuracy, fairness, integrity and objectivity. 

  • Partner closely with the Executive Producer, Global Video Production, to align resources, priorities and long-term production strategies. 

  • Oversee onboarding, training and professional development for production staff, helping build a highly skilled and future-ready team. 

 
Who you are 

  • An experienced newsroom leader with a strong background in video production and digital storytelling. 

  • A strong news editor with demonstrated editorial judgment and the ability to make decisions quickly under pressure. 

  • An effective people manager who can lead, motivate and develop high-performing teams. 

  • A collaborative communicator who works effectively across departments, time zones and cultures. 

  • Passionate about journalism, innovation and finding new ways to serve audiences through video. 

  • Have a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience, including at least five years of full-time work as an editor, reporter or producer preferably in an international newsroom. 

  • Have extensive knowledge of video production workflows across horizontal, live and vertical video formats. 

  • Have demonstrated experience leading teams in a fast-paced newsroom or live news environment. 

  • Have a deep understanding of the international and U.S. news agendas. 

  • Have advanced professional fluency in written and spoken English. 

  • Be willing to work nights, weekends and holidays as needed in a 24/7 news environment.

  • Experience leading video production teams in an international news organization. 

  • Proficiency with advanced video editing software and media asset management systems. 

  • Experience using audience insights, analytics and engagement data to inform content decisions and strategy. 

  • Knowledge of SEO, digital publishing and platform-specific video best practices. 

  • Experience implementing new workflows, technologies or AI-enabled tools to improve newsroom efficiency. 

  • Fluency in additional world languages. 

  • Experience building teams, managing organizational change or scaling production operations. 

  • Experience training, mentoring and developing producers and editors into future newsroom leaders.
