The Associated Press seeks a seasoned reporter to help anchor an ambitious education coverage initiative, working with journalists across the AP’s 50 state footprint, the wider AP cooperative and leading education news outlets.

 

Responsibilities:

This is a temporary position, lasting for two years, and may be based in any U.S. city with an AP office. Reporting to the education news director, this reporter will bring a hard accountability edge to an examination of the effects of the pandemic on the U.S. education system, focusing on equity, technology and other themes. The successful candidate will deploy creative solutions to hurdles, such as access, to amplify the voices of students and families, and cultivate contacts within underserved communities to focus coverage on schools and families with fewer resources. This newsperson should know how to communicate effectively over distance, create community using virtual platforms, and thrive in a fast-paced and intensely competitive market, while spotting trends before they fully emerge. This newsperson must have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

 

The successful candidate will:
 

  • have a demonstrated history of successful reporting on education, or a similarly challenging beat, with a record of compelling work on deadline and the production of enterprise that is illuminating and entertaining. 
  • work among a team of journalists, reporters and editors to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
  • have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.  
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.  
  • pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

 

Qualifications:

This newsperson must have demonstrated success developing sources, prying loose and poring through documents and following the money to break news and hold authorities to account. This is not a data journalism position, but candidates should be comfortable working within a data-driven structure. Applicants should show a broad understanding of education policy on a national scope and education in practice, on a classroom or home-schooling level. The successful candidate will be familiar navigating collaborations between news organizations. The successful candidate should have at least three years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.   

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S., or be able to gain permission to work in the U.S.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in Spanish or a second language is a plus.
  • Basic proficiency in using an iPhone for photos and video is required. Advanced proficiency is a plus. 
  • Strong command of social media and networking tools in newsgathering is a plus.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and an ability to reorganize priorities in the face of rapidly changing needs and resources.
