The Associated Press seeks an experienced news manager to lead an ambitious education coverage initiative, harnessing the AP’s 50 state footprint, the AP cooperative’s members and collaborations with leading education news outlets.



This is a temporary position, lasting for two years, and may be based in any U.S. city with an AP office. Reporting to the deputy managing editor for U.S. news, the network director will lead an examination of the effects of the pandemic on the U.S. education system, focusing on equity, technology and other themes. The successful candidate will empower staff and network members to use tools, particularly data, to tailor coverage to their own audiences, hold education leaders to account and amplify the voices of students and families. This news director will also solicit input from media partners and members of underserved communities to focus attention on schools and families with fewer resources, while collaborating with AP’s regional and global news leadership to set and execute AP’s strategy for education coverage. The successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively over distance, create community using virtual platforms, and thrive in a fast-paced and intensely competitive market, while spotting trends before they fully emerge, and must have the ability and willingness to work as coverage demands, including at night and on weekends, as AP is a 24/7 operation.


The successful candidate will:


  • have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively and successfully as the leader of a diverse team of journalists who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other digital platforms.
  • place a special focus on working closely with visual journalists to ensure the company’s coverage of these formats serves the needs of AP’s global customers.
  • pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.



Candidates must have demonstrated success in leading a team that breaks news and produces distinct, all-formats coverage off the news. Applicants should show a broad understanding of the relationships between local, national and international audiences, as well as the evolving ways to reach those audiences. The successful candidate will have familiarity with navigating collaborations between news organizations. Applicants must be able to lead, guide, motivate and innovate inside a multi-format newsroom, and be able to coordinate and communicate with AP staffers throughout the company and AP customers worldwide. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with colleagues and peers in teams, and should have at least five years of full-time experience leading a beat team, department or newsroom at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau, subregion or regional desk.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S., or be able to gain permission to work in the U.S.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in Spanish or a second language is a plus.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and an ability to reorganize priorities in the face of rapidly changing needs and resources.
