Company: Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering fast, unbiased news from every corner of the world to all media platforms and formats. Founded in 1846, AP today is the largest and most trusted source of independent news and information. On any given day more than half the world's population sees news from AP.

The Associated Press seeks a talented journalist with a deep and successful record of covering climate change to direct its coverage of the global environment and climate as a news director, based in New York, London or Washington D.C.

Reporting to a deputy managing editor, this news director will lead AP’s reporting in text, video and photos on climate and the environment in all the ways it touches our lives, including science, health, business, energy and politics, crafting a news report that is comprehensive and quick, consistently breaks news and is a source of distinct, richly reported enterprise in a highly competitive news environment. This news director is a strategic leader in AP’s newsroom and will collaborate with AP’s regional and global news leadership to set and execute AP’s strategy for coverage of the global environment. The successful candidate will have the skills needed to build a new team and will work in concert with AP’s grants and partnerships staff to grow financial support for AP’s coverage of climate change. This news director must have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

The successful candidate will:

  • have prior experience leading news coverage in multiple countries, or experience reporting and/or leading coverage about climate change around the world.
  • have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively and successfully as the leader of a diverse team of journalists who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other digital platforms.
  • have interest and strength in strategizing growth of coverage and resources, both internal and external, around climate change.
  • lead coverage of breaking climate news, placing a special focus on working closely with visual journalists to ensure the company’s coverage of these formats serves the needs of AP’s global customers.
  • pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

Qualifications: The climate and environment news director must have demonstrated excellence as a newsroom leader, with a deep record of innovation and successful change management, as well as experience guiding reporters, editors and producers to deliver stories about complex issues in a clear and engaging way. Applicants must be able to lead, guide, motivate and innovate inside a multi-format newsroom. This is anticipated to be a growing global team, dependent in part on foundation funding and as such, demands strategic skills and interest working with groups beyond AP’s newsroom. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with colleagues and peers in teams, have experience working in or leading coverage of breaking/spot news, and have at least three years of full-time experience leading a beat team, department or newsroom at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau, subregion or regional desk.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. or the U.K. will be mandatory.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Advanced-level professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats.
  • History of leadership of journalists working in more than one format is a decided plus.

Application deadline is August 5, 2021 11:59pm est
