The Associated Press seeks a Senior Financial Analyst for AP News Finance team based in New York City.


The Senior Financial Analyst will be a key member of the News Finance team; responsible for the financial oversight of a worldwide operation with an expense budget of over $200m and over 1,400 staff members.


This position will provide value-added financial support, operational analysis, and expense control guidance to both Finance and News management while continuously working to complete a myriad of standard and ad hoc assignments within prescribed deadlines.


The successful candidate must be able to multi-task, change priorities rapidly, and bring all projects to a timely and accurate conclusion. The individual must be able to react quickly and think creatively in response to all analytical requests.




  • Assist with the daily expense monitoring and financial analysis required to maintain the economic solvency of the News division
  • Participate in the annual budget process which includes a bottom-up plan encompassing detailed headcount analysis as well as focused attention to primary expense general ledger accounts
  • Monitor budget performance during monthly closing process which will include variance analysis, accrual review and report generation
  • Provide Finance and News management with cohesive expense summaries addressing all informational needs
  • Communicate financial results and establish fiscal policy for non-financial managers
  • Prepare and release worldwide monthly financial results to departments in a timely fashion and respond to all questions immediately
  • Develop constructive relationships with business owners and function as the first point of contact in all finance-related issues




  • Bachelors degree in Finance/Accounting or equivalent experience
  • Minimum three years FP&A experience
  • Superior analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Must be able to work effectively on an independent basis and in a team environment
  • Must be detail oriented and able to manage multiple priorities with conflicting deadlines.
  • Working knowledge of accounting theories, practices, and GAAP
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills


Systems Requirements:


  • Advanced Excel – familiarity with managing data via pivot tables, v-lookups, etc.
  • User proficiency of Oracle Hyperion Essbase Reporting
  • User proficiency of SAP Business Warehouse (BW/BI), including BEx Analyzer reporting
  • Prefer working knowledge of SAP - General Ledger/GL (ECC).
