The Associated Press seeks a social content producer who is creative, passionate about experimentation and eager to join a new team of diverse journalists focused on digital audiences, to work as a newsperson in New York.

 

Reporting to a deputy director of digital news, this newsperson will be a part of a growing team executing AP’s direct-to-audience engagement strategy and will focus on the curation of AP content on social media. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of how news travels on social media and will work collaboratively with teams across AP’s global newsroom to develop social content that engages users on various platforms and drives traffic to APNews.com. This newsperson will understand how to make the most of social engagement metrics, manage production calendars and promote best practices in social content creation. The successful candidate will be a digital native, with a record of producing engaging digital content, including video, and must have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

 

The successful candidate will:

  • have a strong understanding of social media optimization and driving audience to a story, as well as an understanding of how to effectively plan and analyze metrics and make them actionable.
  • exhibit the ability to package and optimize content for various social platforms, including developing strategic campaigns specific to those platforms.
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate and drive stories that customers will use and that consumers will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms
  • have experience in social video production, including understanding of Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects or related tools.
  • be able to quickly become conversant with every aspect of AP’s all formats news report, and have the ability to identify opportunities for optimal digital treatment and promotion of our best work.
  • have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams of journalists and designers at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • pursue innovative techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

 

Qualifications: This social media producer must have the ability to spot opportunities to make AP’s exclusive and distinctive news shine, with experience in applying best practices for social content, search engine and social media optimization. They must be able to work swiftly and accurately under tight deadlines, and plan and complete short- and long-term projects. The successful candidate should have at least one year of full-time experience as an editor, reporter or social media producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

 

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S., or be able to gain permission to work in the U.S.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in written and spoken Spanish is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
