The Associated Press seeks two digitally-savvy journalists to join its news curation and audience engagement team as a newsperson, based in New York City.


Reporting to the deputy director of digital news, this newsperson will be a part of the team executing AP’s direct-to-audience engagement strategy, focusing of the curation of AP’s digital platforms and promotion of AP content on social media. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of online news and will work collaboratively with teams across the AP to deliver an integrated experience that drives traffic and serves our customers and our audiences. They must be a digital native, with a record of producing digital content. The successful candidate should have experience in news site management, and must have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.


The successful candidate will:

  • be, or become, conversant with every aspect of AP’s all formats news report, and have the ability to identify opportunities for optimal digital treatment and promotion of our best work.

  • have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.

  • have a strong understanding of search engine optimization and driving audience to a story, as well as an understanding of how to effectively plan and analyze metrics and make them actionable.

  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate and drive stories that customers will use and that consumers will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms

  • pursue innovative techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.


Qualifications: This newsperson must have the ability to spot opportunities to make AP’s exclusive and distinctive news shine, with experience in applying best practices for social content, search engine and social media optimization. This newsperson must be able to work swiftly and accurately under tight deadlines, and plan and complete short- and long-term projects. The successful candidate should have at least one year of full-time experience as an editor or reporter at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.


Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

  • Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.

  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in written and spoken Spanish is a plus.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
