The Associated Press seeks a talented journalist and newsroom leader to join its new Global Religion team as a news editor, based in New York.

 

Reporting to the Global Religion editor, this news editor will help lead a team of journalists who cover religion around the world and will have direct responsibility for crafting a text and digital news report on religion and faith that is rich in exclusive spot news and distinct, deeply reported enterprise. The successful candidate will be a strong text editor and manager, comfortable working across media formats and at times directing overall all-formats coverage to serve AP's wide-ranging set of customers across the globe. This news editor will aggressively plan for both upcoming events and unexpected breaking news and search for new and unique ways to promote the best of AP’s religion coverage on its customer, consumer and social media platforms. The successful candidate will coordinate with AP bureaus around the world to cover news about religion and faith and must have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

 

The successful candidate will:

  • have a demonstrated history of success as a driver of coverage and as a text editor, with a record of creating and delivering compelling work on deadline that is illuminating and entertaining.
  • manage and drive a small team of journalists to excellence, delivering spot news and visually driven enterprise that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
  • interact with AP’s customer desk and planning editors to ensure up-to-date information about AP’s religion coverage is available to customers in real time.
  • have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate and drive stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
  • pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
     
    Qualifications: This news editor must have demonstrated excellence as an editor and/or manager and familiarity with faith and religion, with a record of creating and/or guiding exclusive and distinctive news from inception to publication. The successful candidate will also have proven technical skills in digital storytelling. Applicants must be able to work collaboratively with reporters, photographers, video journalists, producers and editors to identify opportunities for strong stories focused on religion and faith. The candidate must be able to work swiftly and accurately under tight deadlines, and help others to do so, and have the ability plan and complete longer-term projects. The successful candidate should have at least three years of full-time experience as an editor or reporter at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
     
    Other qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Authorization to work in U.S. will be mandatory.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on a complex, challenging story lines.
