Help lead a dynamic team of journalists covering the biggest names and releases in entertainment for a global audience. Be at the center of planning, coordinating and executing coverage of events like the Oscars, Grammys, Emmys, Met Gala and more.



The position requires coordinating across formats and throughout The Associated Press to deliver fast, authoritative coverage of the biggest entertainment stories of the day and year. Strong text editing and organization skills required, conceptualizing stories for a digital audience and a collaborative approach toward other formats and teams. The position involves cultivating and maintaining sources so that AP breaks news and continues to be an authoritative and trusted voice in global entertainment news.

This is a management position based in New York City. The AP is currently a hybrid office-remote workplace. Candidates must have the ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.


The successful news editor will:

  • Oversee planning and editing of stories and events. The news editor will be doing a significant amount of text editing, ranging from short spot news items to enterprise pieces, as well as reviews and breaking stories like awards shows and other entertainment news.
  • Thrive in a fast-paced and intensely competitive market, spotting trends before they fully emerge.
  • Look across formats to find video and photos that are strong and can rise to the top of the daily entertainment report on APNews and social sites.
  • Coach entertainment journalists to do their best work and elevate stories so that they can reach the largest possible audience and engage readers who are both interested in entertainment news as well as those who aren’t.
  • Factor in audience considerations such as headlines, social media plans and story formats to widen the reach of our journalism.
  • Have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • Communicate story plans in a timely, informative way to AP’s customers.  


About AP’s Entertainment staff: Entertainment has 40-plus journalists in the text, photo and video disciplines with a presence in key entertainment hubs like Los Angeles, New York, London, Nashville and Seoul. Customers rely on AP to deliver crisp, quick dispatches on everything from awards shows, obituaries and red carpets as well as features and reviews on the biggest releases and trend stories.



  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • At least five years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk. Experience as an editor is a strong plus.  
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S., or be able to gain permission to work in the U.S.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a second language is a plus.
  • Creative problem-solving skills and an ability to reorganize priorities in the face of rapidly changing needs and resources.
  • Organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects and duties each day.
  • Basic public speaking skills and the ability to drive cross-newsroom projects, with support from the global entertainment editor.
