Company: Associated Press

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press is seeking a Media Relations Manager based in its New York City headquarters.

Reporting to the Global Director of Media Relations and Corporate Communications, the Media Relations Manager helps execute and grow a proactive, strategic, brand-enhancing program of media relations on behalf of AP, the definitive source for news and information, and its senior leadership.

The Manager promotes AP’s products and services and global journalism and serves as a key point of contact with outside media seeking to interview AP journalists, executives and managers of AP’s product and services. The Manager promotes and helps guard the integrity of AP news and the journalists who report it across all platforms and, as necessary, acts as the on-the-record spokesperson for the world’s most trusted news organization.

This is a fast-paced position that requires exceptional organizational skills, the ability to multitask and attention to detail.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Raise awareness of AP products and services and global journalism through press releases, email, social media, The Definitive Source corporate blog and other means.
  • Interact with AP’s marketing colleagues in planning and executing global outreach in support of AP’s products and services.
  • Be the first point of contact with outside vendors and AP marketing staffers as they plan to announce business agreements with the AP. This interaction may include the drafting or vetting of press releases, issued by AP or jointly with the vendor, and other promotional initiatives, including the use of Twitter and other platforms.
  • Help coordinate crisis communications, including, but not limited to, issues of journalist safety and press access.
  • Be familiar with reporters, websites, blogs, and social media feeds that cover the media industry and will be swift and adept at seeking corrections of misinformation or inaccuracies about AP.
  • Interact daily with AP news staffers and assist the global director in staying abreast of the AP news department’s assignments and coverage plans worldwide to help field interview requests that come in daily from broadcasts, publications, and online outlets -- and to proactively offer interviews to top broadcasters with AP journalists who produce high-impact stories, thereby amplifying AP’s journalism and newsgathering mission. Know when to decline certain requests for AP staffers’ time and when to turn desirable inquiries into Yes.
  • Be a good writer -- and a fast writer -- and adhere strictly at all times to AP editorial style as spelled out in the AP Stylebook.
  • Demonstrate an insatiable fluency in the day’s news, the newsgathering process and the ever-evolving digital distribution of news, plus the savvy to help advise AP Corporate Communications on how best to utilize digital platforms to serve its Media Relations needs.
  • Manage the AP corporate website’s Media Center.
  • Move quickly, act decisively, reach out to media and staffers scattered across time zones, prioritize among the incoming emails that come in from around the world at all hours, and manage time wisely to both meet outside reporters’ deadlines and accommodate the often limited availability of AP reporters dug in on covering breaking news for the AP wire.
  • Help prepare AP journalists and executives for media interviews and industry speaking engagements.
  • Take initiative, as required, during unforeseen crises to forge a consensus among contrasting views at AP in order to execute concise external messaging (and responses, as might be needed).
  • Some evening and weekend work will be required and the Manager is expected to be on-call after hours.
  • Other projects as needed.

Required experience:

4-6 years in media relations or public relations, or commensurate journalism experience. Deep understanding and use of social media. Excellent writing skills and fluency in AP style. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

The successful applicant will work on a hybrid schedule out of AP’s New York City headquarters.

Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required. Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.

Application deadline is 11:59pm on January 25, 2022.
