The Associated Press seeks a resourceful journalist or operations professional with strong technology skills and a proven track record of finding and implementing creative solutions to the technical challenges faced by a modern, global organization. You will join a team responsible for creating the work conditions inside AP’s News division that allow our journalists to succeed as they tell stories and cover news around the world.

 

Responsibilities: This manager will report to the director of news operations and be based in New York. In this role, you will represent the needs of AP’s journalists around the world in all formats and act as a liaison with colleagues in other departments including Technology, Global Real Estate and Procurement. You will help to define requirements for short- and long-term projects and work with other teams to implement them. Your primary focus will be on newsroom technology and collaboration tools, including coordinating the rollout for new applications, sunsetting old systems, planning for technical outages and managing department communication tools and pathways. Additionally, you will help oversee the physical aspects of our newsroom in New York, helping leaders from various departments in the News division drive collaboration among colleagues and assisting with coordinating infrastructure changes that affect how our journalists work.

 

Qualifications: You are a self-starter with strong technology skills who is comfortable building relationships with direct colleagues, as well as staff who work in other departments at a global, mission-driven company. You are a solutions-oriented manager who can translate complex concepts in clear ways to diverse audiences on tight deadlines. You’re able to dig into the details, while also being able to see the bigger picture. You should have demonstrated excellence as a project manager, program manager or other similar role in the operations space, and a solid history of learning new applications and technology concepts quickly. You must be able to work effectively as a member of a team and should have at least three years of full-time experience in the operations space at a medium-to-large organization, ideally with a global presence. Experience working for a digital news outlet or within media is a plus.

 

Please note: AP is currently a hybrid office-remote workplace. This role would require the successful candidate to work from AP’s New York office at least 2-3 days per week, subject to change.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so. 
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • Advanced-level professional competency with the Microsoft Office suite of software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Experience with PowerBI and off-the-shelf collaboration tools such as Slack, Asana, Microsoft Teams is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on a complex, challenging projects.
  • Have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, at times, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
