APNews.com seeks an Engagement Editor to join our growing team of diverse journalists focused on digital audiences. We are looking for a journalist with curiosity, drive and creativity; someone who has a rich understanding of how news travels on site, social, search, newsletters and other platforms.
This is an individually contributing role that will report directly to our News Editor. Employees near an AP office would be expected to be in office on a hybrid basis.
What you will do:
Curate and manage the AP homepage during assigned shifts (AM, PM, and weekends), ensuring timely and impactful presentation of top stories
- Serve in rotating roles across shifts, including on- and off-platform curation
- Select, prioritize, and promote high-quality content across formats, including text, photo, video, audio, and interactive storytelling
- Optimize stories for search and discoverability, applying SEO and GEO best practices to enhance reach and audience engagement
- Draft and distribute compelling push alerts and social posts to drive traffic and audience interaction
- Collaborate with newsroom teams to surface and elevate the most newsworthy and engaging content
- Contribute to and help develop digital-first story ideas, partnering with reporting teams to shape coverage for online audiences

Who you are:
We’re looking for a digital native who has strong news judgment, a sharp eye for detail and a deep understanding of how to target and serve online audiences that come and are guided to AP’s digital platforms.
The successful candidate is someone who knows how to make a good headline great; who has their finger on the pulse of the social conversation; who can make data-informed news decisions; and who can collaborate with, and complement the expertise of, AP journalists around the world.
Requirements:
- At least one year of full-time work as an editor, reporter, social producer or site curator at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau. We will also consider recent graduates with internship experience.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (e.g., experience working as an editor, reporter or social media producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau).
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
- Thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-driven news environment, with the ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously
- Demonstrates strong news judgment and the ability to interpret audience metrics to inform editorial decisions and grow engagement with diverse global audiences
- Quickly develops a comprehensive understanding of AP’s multi-format journalism, including text, photo, video, audio, and interactive content
- Communicates clearly and works collaboratively across cross-functional teams, including journalists, editors, designers, and digital specialists
- Applies innovative, audience-focused approaches while upholding AP’s standards for accuracy, independence, and objectivity
- Is flexible and available to work a nontraditional schedule, including weekends, with consistent execution during evening and late-breaking coverage hours. in support of a 24/7 global news operation.

Salary & Benefits:
This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $61,463.48 and $85,214 based on location and years of professional experience. Compensation is contingent on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
