Company: Associated Press

The Associated Press is the essential global news network, delivering fast, unbiased news from every corner of the world to all media platforms and formats. Founded in 1846, AP today is the largest and most trusted source of independent news and information. On any given day more than half the world's population sees news from AP.

The Associated Press seeks a gifted journalist, experienced manager and visionary newsroom leader to be its next Director of Photography.

Based in New York, the successful candidate will serve as the strategic leader of AP’s photojournalism around the world and the steward of one of the proudest legacies in the news business, with 31 Pulitzer Prizes to its credit. From Iwo Jima to Iraq, and from the streets of wartime Saigon to the halls of the Trump White House, AP photographers have long been the record-keepers of history. And they have, at times, quite literally, changed its course. The Director of Photography will hold a broad set of responsibilities, starting with the quality and competitiveness of AP's overall photo report, and including the guidance and mentoring of its photojournalists around the world. The successful candidate will be a member of the senior management team of the News Department, directly oversee photo managers for sports and entertainment, clearly and regularly communicate strategic journalistic and business priorities to photojournalists in the field, and work closely with colleagues and AP’s cross-format regional and department leaders around the world to drive strategic, operational and budgetary decisions in News.

The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and execute a vision for a global photo report that is engaging, informative, creative, comprehensive and inspiring, and help AP develop better metrics to measure success against those goals.
  • Strive to win on every big story, working with colleagues across regions and departments, and in all media formats, to plan and execute coverage of global events, breaking news and distinctive, high-impact enterprise.
  • Recruit and develop career plans for photographers and photo editors, with an eye toward building a workforce that more closely resembles the diversity of the communities AP covers around the world.
  • Serve as an industry leader in the crafting and implementation of standards for authenticity, accuracy, safety and access, and represent AP and its photo report as a thought leader in the field and at industry events.
  • Work closely with colleagues on AP’s Revenue and Product teams to seek new business opportunities for AP’s photojournalism, and develop strong relationships with peer colleagues among AP customers and partner organizations.
  • Manage a budget responsible for photo coverage of major global events and augmenting regional spending on top news, while helping ensure AP’s photo needs are met during the process of setting budget and staffing priorities.

Qualifications: Candidates must have demonstrated excellence as a photographer and photo editor, with a deep and respected record of working with photojournalists and reporters in all media formats —both domestically and overseas—to craft industry-leading coverage for regional and global audiences. Applicants should have a clear understanding of how the transition to digital platforms as the dominant form of news consumption impacts photojournalism, including how customers use and news consumers view AP’s photos. The next Director of Photography will have an established record of innovation and integrating emerging platforms and photo technology into their journalism, as well as successful work with colleagues and peers as a leader and member of teams. The successful candidate should have at least 10 years of full-time experience as a photographer or photo editor a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

    Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Authorization to work in the U.S. will be mandatory.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • Professional competency in another language is a decided plus.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in photography and photo editing.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats.

Application deadline is 11:59pm EST on July 22, 2018
