Location: New York, NY, US, 10281

Company: Associated Press

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a creative and innovative editor to lead a group of journalists who bring together all aspects of our news report to tell immersive stories online, playing a pivotal role as a leader on a growing team of diverse journalists focused on digital audiences. We’re looking for a mission-driven journalist to take charge of a team that produces some of AP's most distinctive storytelling.

Responsibilities: In this role, you will be based in New York and report to a deputy director of digital news. You will oversee a group of talented visual and digital journalists whose primary focus is to shape and elevate the best of AP’s journalism – as news breaks, around planned events such as Olympics or political conventions, and in the development, reporting and presentation of AP’s most ambitious enterprise and investigative reporting. You and your team of producers will bring together AP’s report in all media formats and create richly curated, elegantly designed presentations that are defined by the imagination and innovation required to bring them to life.

You are an editor whose ambitions for how stories are told match your enthusiasm for the reporting that underlies their presentation. Importantly, you believe that immersive stories can and should be an everyday experience for our readers and viewers, rather that something they get from AP only a few times a year. And you’re eager to provide the leadership needed across the AP’s global newsroom to make that ideal a reality.

Qualifications: We’re looking for a collaborative journalist who has demonstrated success leading and growing a team of visual producers focused on digital storytelling – someone who can bring to the table a deep understanding of the digital media landscape for immersive stories. Of course, you’ll have a great news sense and know how to highlight the stories people want to share and talk about. But you’re also an editor who understands the value of data and analytics, and you know how to balance insight and instinct to achieve remarkable outcomes.

You are also a capable project manager and an editor who can keep the workload manageable and the project running on time. You know how to innovate inside a newsroom while upholding editorial standards, and you enjoy working with colleagues from other departments, including Products and Revenue, to reach ambitious audience and revenue goals. As an AP journalist, you’ll also have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends as coverage and breaking news demand.

To achieve these goals, you are adept at:

  • Setting standards for story layout and integration of visual elements.
  • Coordinating large-scale projects, working with journalists in different formats and time zones to design a cohesive and engaging story presentation that draws on the strengths of each format.
  • Implementing an iterative design process for digital storytelling that brings together reporting teams across formats and elevates the user experience and aesthetics of AP’s journalism.
  • Leading story design for AP’s highest-profile stories, developing innovative storytelling approaches for high impact.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as five years of full-time work as an editor or digital producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • The anticipated salary range for this position is $85,500 - $116,000 contingent on experience and other job-related factors.  Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.

Application deadline is December 21, 2022 11:59 p.m. (ET)
