The AP seeks a mid to senior-level transactional corporate and privacy counsel for its Legal team. The position may be remote-first, but the attorney will be required to spend a portion of their time at the company headquarters in New York City at the discretion of the company and the General Counsel.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Structure, draft and negotiate agreements covering the production, acquisition, licensing, marketing and distribution of content in various formats, across all media and licensing of software and media-related services.
  • Work closely with AP’s Ad Solutions, technology products and advertising teams on transactions that drive the company’s revenue, with a focus on data security and privacy issues.
  • Draft, negotiate, and close privacy and data protection agreements with enterprise customers, including customers in highly regulated industries, such as financial services and healthcare.
  • Support commercial attorneys on data protection issues in negotiations.
  • Partner with the security team on security-related issues in negotiations.
  • Provide legal advice to internal business clients on a broad range of business and legal matters including intellectual property, commercial transactions, privacy, and regulatory compliance.
  • Train administrative, business and technology personnel about legal best practices regarding contracts, data security and privacy law issues, and other relevant subject matters.
  • Act as legal liaison to internal business groups, and liaison to outside counsel as directed by the general counsel.
  • Collaborate with Legal department colleagues on a variety of legal issues including privacy, security, contracts, and IP matters.
  • Undertake special projects as directed by General Counsel.

 

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school;
  • Licensed to practice and in good standing with any state bar and authorized to practice in New York;
  • At least 5-6 years’ experience;
  • In-depth knowledge of contract and general corporate law, intellectual property rights, licensing, privacy and data protection, and related regulatory matters required;
  • Familiarity with copyright, privacy, defamation and other legal issues integral to contracts entered by media licensing companies;
  • Proven track record for cultivating strong relationships with key internal and external stakeholders;
  • Prior experience with a media-related organization is a plus;
  • Ability and desire to expand knowledge and competencies to grow with the company’s diverse needs and initiatives;
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required;
  • Authorization to work in the United States for any employer is mandatory.

 

Preferred:

  • Media industry experience

Due to Covid restrictions, we are currently working on a remote basis. When the restrictions are lifted, the successful applicant will work from AP’s New York office under a hybrid work arrangement.
