The Associated Press seeks a journalist with a strong track record of covering science and climate solutions with creativity, passion and constant experimentation, someone able to report and produce for both text and social video to draw audiences into one of the most important stories of our time.
What you will do:
- Connect the latest on climate science with technological innovations and market trends to produce stories on solutions that can confront climate change.
- Have extensive experience in telling climate and science stories on camera.
- Be able to tell climate stories in non-traditional ways, like in newsletters, live blogs and photo slides for Instagram.
- Be able to use data to evaluate audience needs as well as an understanding of how to effectively plan and analyze metrics and make them actionable.
- Have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams of journalists at AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
- Have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
Who you are:
- Based in New York City.
- Background in science reporting, including climate science.
- Experience reviewing science journals and surfacing strong stories in them.
- Experience doing explanatory on camera for social media channels.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 4 years minimum experience in journalism
- Authorization to work in U.S. is mandatory.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
Preferred qualifications:
- The ideal candidate will have the ability to report and package engaging stories about climate solutions that will resonate with audiences that are interested in but not expert in climate topics.
- This person will be able to quickly analyze scientific papers on the latest in climate science, green energy transition, the built environment, electric vehicle adoption and other topics related to climate and environment.
- They will be able to work swiftly and accurately under tight deadlines, and plan and complete short- and long-term projects.
- The successful candidate should have at least two years of full-time experience as a reporter at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

The anticipated salary range for this position is based on a candidate’s skills, qualifications and location. The Associated Press offers comprehensive benefits, which include:

This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $53,477 and $85,214 based on location and years of professional experience. Additional compensation is negotiable based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
