The Associated Press seeks an experienced multimedia designer to work on a range of editorial products and projects for thousands of customer newsrooms around the globe. The winning candidate will have news experience and will be able to tell stories in creative ways, working with colleagues to visualize design concepts. This position can be located in AP bureaus - New York, NY, Washington, DC or Los Angeles, CA.

 

Responsibilities: This designer will create elements for broadcast users of our Graphics Bank product, serving news-related elements for end users to download and incorporate in their own broadcast and digital shows, streams and sites. You will be a self-starter, hooked into the daily news flow, and create those elements without needing to be told. This role is responsible for ensuring Graphics Bank is updated for AP customers when needed through the day, but also will be involved with other stories working with our digital, news and enterprise teams, as well as other customer commissions or projects. You will establish relationships across the news department in order to advocate for design work as part of our daily thinking and output.

 

Qualifications: You will first and foremost be an editorial person, passionate about the news and storytelling. You will be expected to contribute to the daily editorial discussion, suggesting design ideas or stories for our customers and our digital audiences. You should be an excellent designer, comfortable using motion graphics, illustration, and animation to enhance our video, digital and social needs. Applicants must be willing and able to work any shift, including nights and weekends, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

Additional qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so. 
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.  
  • A minimum of three years of digital, print and motion design experience.
  • Advanced skills in design, layout and typography across digital platforms.
  • Fluency in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere). 3D skills a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills – you are a considerate collaborator, a valued partner and a team player.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines. 
  • A portfolio or work samples are required.
