Location: St. Louis or Kansas City, MO, MO, US

Company: Associated Press

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a video journalist with a history of successful television and online video storytelling to join its team in Missouri, covering some of the biggest stories in the state. This video journalist will shoot, write, edit and produce video — including LIVE video — stories for AP’s broadcast, digital and mobile customers and platforms.

Missouri and neighboring states produce an abundance of news stories that lend themselves to compelling visual journalism, including frequent extreme weather, the ongoing impacts of climate change, and some of the nation’s most interesting tensions around politics, race, schools, crime and culture.

In this role, you will conduct interviews, write scripts and edit footage in different styles – from raw cuts to fully produced pieces – to deliver engaging visual journalism. You may occasionally work as a desk producer to cut edits from live video, affiliate contributions and video filed by other AP videojournalists. As a member of a dynamic, round-the-clock operation, you will also be expected to pitch, develop and research stories and contribute reporting in other media formats. That includes reporting and writing text stories and shooting photos to help produce a competitive and comprehensive all-formats news report. You should be able to travel extensively to cover breaking news, often at short notice.

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • have a great news sense, with the ability to consistently generate distinctive video stories for national and global audiences.
  • apply superior skills in video-based storytelling, including shooting, editing and writing, in both static environments and in delivering unpredictable breaking news.
  • conceptualize and implement creative digital projects, and communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other digital platforms.

You should have advanced individual technical skills in creating video content, as well as the ability to work within an all-formats team to apply those skills from start to finish on breaking news and short- and long-term projects. Applicants should be creative, innovative and agile and work effectively in a deadline-driven newsroom. You should have at least three years of full-time news experience as a video journalist at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in video shooting and non-linear editing, preferably with Adobe Premiere.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
  • Employment is contingent on adhering to all company COVID-19 workplace safety policies and protocols, including providing proof of COVID-19 vaccination in accordance with applicable laws.

Application Deadline:  October 19, 2022 @ 11:59PM ET
