Company: Associated Press

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press is expanding its coverage of the United States and looking for video journalists to help tell America’s story. Our next video journalist will join a team that covers a wide range of news and collaborates with the industry’s best journalists to produce stories that are seen around the world.

In this role, you will cover crime and policing, climate change and environmental concerns, swing-state politics including abortion, inequality, Native American issues and much more from Minneapolis, the thriving hub of the Upper Midwest.

You’ll shoot, write, edit and produce video, including live video, for the AP’s broadcast, digital and mobile customers and platforms. As a member of a round-the-clock operation, you’ll also be expected to pitch, develop and research stories, and ideally contribute reporting across formats, including reporting and writing text stories and making photos to help produce a competitive and comprehensive all-formats news report. You may occasionally be asked to help edit live video, affiliate contributions and video from other AP journalists.

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • have a great news sense, with the ability to consistently generate distinctive video stories for national and global audiences.
  • produce creative digital projects and communicate stories that people will want to share on social media and other digital platforms.
  • have a strong desire to cover breaking news and will be willing to travel extensively to cover it, often at short notice.
  • collaborate with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
  • pursue innovative and inclusive coverage strategies while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
  • be able and willing to work any shift – including at night and on weekends – as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

You should have advanced individual technical skills in creating video content, as well as the ability to work within an all-formats team to apply those skills from start to finish on breaking news and short- and long-term projects. Applicants should be creative, innovative and agile and work effectively in a deadline-driven newsroom. You should have at least three years of full-time news experience as a video journalist at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

We’ll consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in video shooting and non-linear editing, preferably with Adobe Premiere.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
  • Employment is contingent on adhering to all company COVID-19 workplace safety policies and protocols, including providing proof of COVID-19 vaccination in accordance with applicable laws.

Application Deadline:  February 13, 2023 @ 11:59PM ET
