The Associated Press seeks a talented journalist to help lead its video coverage of the Deep South. In this role, you’ll be based in Miami, Florida and help shape the AP’s coverage of the United States as it undergoes an exciting period of growth and change. You’ll guide and support video journalists, delivering competitive and engaging text coverage of breaking news and enterprise covering the biggest news in Florida, Georgia, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, including climate, hurricanes, politics and elections.

 

Responsibilities: Reporting to the assistant news director for the Deep South, you will direct overall video coverage from with the goal of serving AP's wide-ranging set of customers across the globe. In addition to your primary responsibility of guiding videojournalists and the overall video report, you may shoot in the field as needed. You and the team of video journalists in the Deep South will craft a video news report that is rich in exclusive spot news, compelling live video and distinct, deeply reported enterprise. You’ll also help plan for upcoming events and unexpected breaking news, and you will search for new and unique ways to promote the best of AP’s coverage on its customer, consumer and social media platforms. In your role as the video leader for the Deep South, you will be asked to coach and guide photographers and text journalists as they gather video and seek out user-generated content on social media platforms.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Our next Deep South video editor must have demonstrated excellence as a video journalist or field video producer, with a record of creating and guiding exclusive and distinctive news from inception to publication. You will cultivate an inclusive, team-first culture, collaborating with diverse journalists across the AP in news gathering, production and digital news. You must be able to move quickly and decisively when news breaks while simultaneously developing future coverage angles and story plans. You have proven technical skills in television and online video production, including knowledge of live video operations and satellite, fiber and FTP transmission, as well as editing non-linear videos, preferably with Adobe Premiere.

 

We’re looking for someone with excellent interpersonal skills who will work effectively as part of a team. You have great news judgment, and you communicate and drive stories that people will want to share and discuss on social media and other platforms. You’re eager to pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity, and you can juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines. As an AP journalist, you must be ready to work at night and on weekends as coverage demands.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience, such as at least three years of full-time work as an editor, reporter or social media producer at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet or AP bureau.

  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.

  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
