The Associated Press seeks a talented, ambitious interactive artist to create news graphics for demanding spot and breaking news coverage. We are looking for a designer with a focus on data visualization and information design to work in our Mexico City office. This is a temporary position lasting through December 2025.

Responsibilities: In this role, you will collaborate with journalists, designers and developers to create engaging, data-driven visual interactives that bring the news to life. You will be responsible for designing and developing interactive graphics, maps, data visualizations, and other immersive experiences that enhance AP’s storytelling and provide compelling narratives for global audiences. Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to rapidly evolving stories. Understanding news values, ethics, and how to present data-driven stories responsibly.

    

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferably five or more years of experience in a fast-paced news or media environment. 
  • Advanced skills in design, layout and typography, illustration, and data visualization. 
  • Fluency in Figma, Data Wrapper and the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, Premiere). 
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills: You’re a considerate collaborator, valued partner, and team player. 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex and challenging story lines. 
  • Eager to pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity. 
  • Professional competency in a language besides English is a strong plus. 

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Background in journalism, information design, or related fields. 
  • Experience with multimedia storytelling, including data visualization and news graphics. 
  • Strong problem-solving, with the ability to troubleshoot and iterate quickly under pressure. 
  • Comfortable working in cross-functional teams with designers, developers and journalists. 
  • Ability to learn and apply new tools and technologies as needed. 
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • A portfolio or work samples are required.
