The Associated Press seeks a talented, ambitious interactive artist to create news graphics for demanding spot and breaking news coverage. We are looking for a designer with a focus on data visualization and information design to work in our Mexico City office.

Responsibilities: In this role, you will collaborate with journalists, designers and developers to create engaging, data-driven visual interactives that bring the news to life. You will be responsible for designing and developing interactive graphics, maps, data visualizations, and other immersive experiences that enhance AP’s storytelling and provide compelling narratives for global audiences. Ability to work under tight deadlines and adapt to rapidly evolving stories. Understanding news values, ethics, and how to present data-driven stories responsibly.

 

We are looking for a candidate with: 

  • A demonstrated history of producing compelling photo, video, audio or text journalism. 
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists across the AP who operate in all formats: photo, video, audio, text, digital/social, interactive and graphics. 
  • The ability to work across regions and formats and communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders. 
  • The ability to build relationships with digital, broadcast, print and audio customers and synthesize customer feedback.
  • Impeccable news judgment, a commitment to accuracy and competitive drive to push AP and its journalists to deliver exclusive stories and swift coverage of breaking news. 
  • The ability to maintain AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity. 

   

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience. 
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus. 
  • All applicants must be authorized to work in the United States or able to gain permission to do so.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously.

 

Preferred Qualifications: We’re looking for an excellent photographer, video journalist, reporter or editor who excels at communicating with colleagues around the globe. You stay on top of the news across regions and beats. Applicants must have top-tier news judgement, a deep understanding of editorial standards and the ability to reorder priorities quickly. You must be able to work effectively as a member of a team and should have at least five years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.
