Location: Los Angeles, CA, US, 90012

Company: Associated Press

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a talented multiformat journalist to cover climate and environment, to be based in Los Angeles, Miami, Seattle or Boston.

We’re looking for an early career journalist who will work closely with AP colleagues in the U.S. and across the world to consistently break news and produce distinct, deeply reported enterprise. You will contribute to AP’s spot coverage of climate, with a focus on coverage of the world’s oceans and fisheries – including their overlap with climate change and biodiversity loss, and how innovative solutions are combatting both of those things. The beat will intersect with business, energy and politics, among other areas. This is a temporary position lasting until Oct. 31, 2026, and covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild.

Responsibilities: While primarily a text reporter, you will work in multiple media formats and collaborate with diverse teams of journalists in text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics. You will generate story ideas that resonate both in the United States and around the world. The position may involve occasional travel, and the successful candidate should be prepared to leave on short notice as news needs arise. You should also be able and willing to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is willing to jump in on spot news as well as produce longer-term enterprise.
  • Understands digital audiences and is open to using different formats and techniques to explain complex concepts for mainstream readers.
  • Likes to work collaboratively as part of a team of journalists, reporters and editors.
  • Has a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms.
  • Will pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

Preferred Qualifications: This is intended as an early career job with significant potential for growth. You should have excellent interpersonal skills and be eager to learn from mentors across the organization. An interest in or a track record of writing about climate and environment-related issues is a plus. You should have strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Authorization to work in the United States.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in another language is a plus.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

This position is covered by The Associated Press’ contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $52,046 and $82,934 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate’s skills, qualifications and market location. Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan and employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.

The Associated Press offers comprehensive benefits which include:

  • Competitive medical, dental and vision coverage
  • Retirement benefits
  • Company paid life insurance
  • Paid vacation and sick days
  • Paid parental leave for any new parent
  • Mental health resources

Benefits may vary based on the job, full-time or part-time schedule, location, and collectively bargained status.

Application deadline is November 25, 2024 at 11:59 PM EST.

AP seeks to build an inclusive organization grounded in respect for differences. We support all aspects of diversity and provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, marital status, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, status as a veteran, or other characteristic protected by law.
