More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a creative and compassionate editor to lead its interactive news team, a group of talented newsroom developers and designers who use the power of code to elevate AP's journalism.

This team is responsible for producing some of AP's most distinctive storytelling, including developing a suite of elections results visualizations used by news sites around the world, developing immersive experiences for some of AP’s most ambitious stories and developing important evergreen visualizations, such as our hurricane and wildfire trackers. The location for this role is flexible – the interactive news editor can work from any U.S. city that has an AP bureau.

About You

· You are ambitious: You have a vision for what interactive news can be and the skills to help take the team to the next level. You want to know what's next.

· You are conversant in web technologies (a background coding JavaScript is especially useful). Even though you won't be writing code all day, you know what goes into web development and you know what it takes to deliver a project.

· You believe in agile best practices and want to work to help the team work efficiently and communicate effectively, automating the boring parts to focus on the work that makes the biggest difference.

· You are a capable project manager. You know how to keep the workload manageable and keep the project on time.

About Our Team

The interactive news team is part of AP’s data journalism team and the larger Digital News team. Based in locations across the U.S., the data team works with reporters and editors throughout AP and around the globe, doing data analysis and software development that furthers our journalism. Together we work on a variety of data-rich news projects:

· Building engaging visualizations that help readers understand the most important stories of the day

· Drilling into large data and document sets for AP enterprise stories and investigations

· Building newsroom tools that help us uncover the story and create visual journalism at the speed of news

AP’s newsroom developers build software to solve some of journalism’s most challenging technical problems. We’re working to make it easier to collaborate inside the AP and among newsrooms. The team’s work contributes to nearly every beat AP covers, including environmental, race and ethnicity, business, health and politics.

More about you:

· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

· All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.

· Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language in addition to English is a plus.

· The ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

· Employment is contingent on adhering to all company COVID-19 workplace safety policies and protocols, including providing proof of Covid-19 vaccination in accordance with applicable laws.

Application deadline is June 6, 2022 - 10:59 p.m. est
