The Associated Press seeks an energetic and aggressive reporter with a deep knowledge of China and an understanding of how global forces are shaping the country’s economy and people. You will tap a broad network of sources, aiming to consistently break news and produce distinct, deeply reported stories that appeal to AP’s global audience. You’ll contribute to wider global business and markets coverage, and occasionally general Asia news coverage. The successful candidate will think creatively and critically, and be driven by curiosity about stories that lie at the interface of technology, human behavior and culture. Work at nights and on weekends is occasionally required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats.

Preferred Qualifications: We're looking for someone with at least three years of full-time experience covering China who will consistently deliver high-impact stories that appeal to AP’s global audience. It is essential that you can communicate clearly, concisely and conversationally and deliver complex, challenging stories. You should have strong organizational skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats. You should also have an understanding of financial markets and how to cover them.

The successful candidate will:

  • Work among a team of journalists, reporters and editors in Asia, Europe and the U.S. to deliver spot news and enterprise coverage of China’s economy that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
  • Have a demonstrated history of successful reporting on China, strong source development, with a record of compelling work on deadline, the production of explanatory enterprise that is both illuminating and entertaining, and the ability to tell stories in media formats beyond text alone.
  • Have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • Have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share, like and talk about on social media and other platforms.
  • Pursue innovative and inclusive coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

We’ll consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.
