The Associated Press is offering a paid 12-week full-time summer internship at its New York Health and Science Desk in 2019.

The AP Health and Science Intern will contribute to the AP’s cross-formats report focusing on a variety of health and science issues. The intern will receive experience and training in text and video and will attend editorial meetings. The intern will be expected to keep up-to-date with news in the area, report, conduct interviews, monitor social media and cover breaking health and science news, either by phone or by going to the scene.

The intern will assist in the writing and editing of text stories as well as in the production of video under tight deadlines and aggressively cultivate sources. The intern will research and set up video news and feature stories and join location shoots.  The intern will also be expected to pitch multimedia enterprise story ideas and execute at least one during the internship.

The ideal candidate will be a fast thinker, show creativity and strong news judgment with a keen interest and/or experience in health and science news.  Candidates should be strong storytellers who are able to recognize interesting news elements and suggest their own story ideas.

The intern must become familiar with - and abide by - the AP’s statement of values and principles governing ethics.


  • Applicants must be:
    • current full-time students within one year of earning an undergraduate degree (seniors) when applying or
    • current full-time graduate students, or
    • Students who graduated December 2018.
  • Freshmen and sophomores (first and second year students) are ineligible.
  • Must be able to show proof of legal authorization to participate in a 12-week internship in the U.S. prior to the start of the internship. 
  • Demonstrate proficiency speaking and writing in English.
  • Relevant experience and training in text is required as well as a secondary visual format such as video, photos or interactive/graphics.
  • Have good general knowledge of national and international affairs and a strong interest in science reporting.
  • Have good writing skills, the ability to recognize grammatical and factual errors and knowledgeable of AP Style.
  • Have a prior journalism internship or experience in media.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of online and social media news venues.
  • Be highly organized, attentive to detail and able to multi-task.
  • Be a self-starter with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Submission materials:

  • A 300-word autobiographical essay on this topic: “The Associated Press seeks to recruit and retain a workforce that embodies a wide range of talents, experiences, achievements and journalistic skills. Please describe the qualities and accomplishments you would bring to the company as an intern.”
  • A resume and cover letter (please include your projected graduation date).
  • Three to five examples of your text work (links to an online site of your work are highly preferred).
  • Three to five examples of your visual work -- video, photos, multimedia, interactive, etc. (links to an online site of your work are highly preferred).
  • A reference letter from a prior internship or employer.
  • All application materials should be uploaded simultaneously, including the reference letter.
