The Associated Press seeks a journalism products deputy director for its Text and New Markets Products team who will lead the news cooperative’s efforts to support local newsrooms and identify, develop and manage product offerings and services that help local news outlets grow audience and revenue. This person will manage AP’s wide-reaching local products portfolio, serve as primary support to AP’s Local Media & Markets Sales Team, work closely with AP’s U.S. News team, and oversee the success of various initiatives that benefit local journalism, including AP’s growing story-sharing network and localization guides, among others. This person also will identify opportunities for collaboration and innovation in local journalism and serve as AP’s liaison with local independent online newsrooms as well as the primary products contact for local newspapers and broadcasters.


The deputy director will also help support audience development efforts to bring more attention to AP’s products and work closely with sales teams.


The deputy director will serve as a liaison between customers, editorial, sales, sales operations, marketing, technology and other departments to ensure smooth creation, packaging and delivery of AP’s award-winning content. They will handle day-to-day product needs while providing recommendations for product improvements or new products based on customer feedback, market trends and competitive intelligence.



  • Manage AP’s Local Media products portfolio.
  • Build relationships across various departments within the news cooperative as well as with key customers and other news organizations and potential partners.
  • Conduct regular outreach to customers and potential customers of assigned products to identify feedback, needs and opportunities for collaboration and problem solving. Work closely with AP sales to share and synthesize feedback to inform future product priorities and projects.
  • Perform market research in support of product definition and requirements gathering.
  • Develop product/business scope recommendations and content/personnel requirements.
  • Identify emerging markets, players and opportunities and assist with strategic positioning of AP to fully capitalize on those, whether through new products and offerings or new content and services partnerships.
  • Collaborate with colleagues/other managers to help define the scope of product enhancement and new product development projects.
  • Partner with key staff in multiple departments to coordinate the development and delivery of updated/new products, including the following departments: News, Sales, Technology/project management, Products, Marketing, Finance, Support, Strategy.
  • Oversee product development enhancements to ensure they are completed on time and on budget.
  • Oversee POCs and testing with selected participants.
  • Provide analytics and performance updates of relevant platforms to key stakeholders.
  • Set and maintain support standards and work with Customer Support department to meet those standards.
  • Participate in customer retention and customer engagement for products in the portfolio.



  • At least 5 years of product development, journalism and/or media sales experience strongly desired.
  • The ideal candidate is passionate about local journalism, problem solving and working with others, both internally and externally, to identify and address industry needs and gaps.
  • Should be a resourceful self-starter with exceptional communication skills. Should be able to communicate ideas and complex information clearly and effectively with customers and internal stakeholders.
  • Should be comfortable quickly testing ideas and not be afraid to fail.
  • Able to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Have demonstrated project management skills.
  • Familiarity with AP’s content production and newsroom workflow a plus.
  • Familiarity with AP’s current product offerings a plus.
  • Knowledge of agile methodology for tech projects is preferred.   




Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English language is required.  Authorization to work in the US for any employer is mandatory.


The anticipated salary range for this position is $95,000 - $105,000, contingent on experience and other job-related factors.  Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
