Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press is seeking a multi-skilled manager pivotal to the success of our Global Safety; Risk and Resilience team. This unique role, based out of our London office, will support the international director of GS:RR in providing risk management support across the AP. You will be instrumental in helping keep our global team of journalists safe, ensuring they have the tools, guidance and agency to do their best work.

The overall aim of the Global Safety: Risk and Resilience function is to keep AP journalists safe in the face of war, civil unrest, online attacks, identity-based violence and other evolving threats within the modern media landscape. The successful candidate should be passionate about helping colleagues break major news while mitigating risks and developing commensurate controls to enable our journalists to deliver the world’s biggest stories.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the international director of GS:RR, you will work with the team to develop, oversee, manage and champion safety, risk and resiliency at the AP. You’ll assist with the implementation of a wide range of special projects to improve the overall safety of our journalists. You’ll support stakeholders external to News – including Cybersecurity, Legal and HR – to facilitate cross-departmental project development, providing a holistic and collaborative approach to risk management across the AP. You must be creative, empathetic, inclusive and passionate, willing to innovate and drive our programs forward. And you must possess the highest editorial standards, upholding the AP’s commitment to preserving the integrity and impartiality of our news reporting.

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • Manage specialist media safety projects and tasks, ensuring they are completed on time and within budget.
  • Deliver clear, precise and measured safety, security and resilience advice to our journalists who might be operating in hostile and dangerous environments.
  • Be aware of the risks and concerns facing staff beyond the physical. Psycho-social wellness is of equal importance to the GS:RR team in supporting the welfare of AP colleagues.
  • Assess staff and freelancer training and development needs in alignment with AP's High Risk policy. You’ll work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that training objectives are measured and met, making periodic assessments to ensure competency levels are improved across the organization.
  • Develop innovative ideas to support the design of future hostile environment, public order and first aid training and resilience courses that will empower field journalists to report more safely in difficult and dynamic conditions.
  • Be willing to travel to developing and high-risk areas and countries, often at short notice, to deliver safety and security training, advice and support.
  • Maintain current knowledge of evolving cyber and digital security concerns and corresponding mitigations.
  • Develop and deliver presentations and internal and external documentation using Microsoft applications.
  • Work out of our London office and work outside of business hours as required, as the AP is a 24/7 operation. This will include joining in the GS:RR weekend on-call rotation.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Strong knowledge of social media platforms and online protection tools.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication across cultures and quick responsiveness across time zones.
  • First aid/trauma first aid qualifications equivalent to FREC3/FPOSI.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
  • A commitment to actively supporting a diverse, inclusive and equitable work environment.
  • Authorization to work in the UK will be mandatory.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in news or other media organizations, preferably in a risk reduction role.
  • We will consider transferable experience in supplementary roles within the fields of security, safety, military, law enforcement or intelligence.
  • Experience delivering safety, security and medical training and products.
  • A proven history of operating and effectively communicating at a management level.

We’ll consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

Application deadline is February 26, 2025 at 11:59 PM EST.
