The Associated Press is seeking a Sr. Virtualization and Automation Systems Engineer to join its team in Cranbury, NJ.


Reporting to the Director, Global Services, this position’s main focus will be on maintaining the Enterprise Windows and VMware infrastructure. The role would also include supporting Amazon Web Services. The on-premise environment consists of approximately 1000+ physical servers, 60+ VMware hosts serving over 1700+ virtual servers and the public environment consists of 800+ EC2 instances and AWS services used. The position’s key focus is on daily administration and maintenance of these Hardware systems, Windows OS, Patch management, software deployment, VMware Virtualization and AWS Cloud management etc.


The candidate will also be involved with other Microsoft Windows based IT systems and projects including, but not limited to Symantec Altiris, system monitoring and capacity planning, and general IT systems (antivirus, personal firewalls, anti-spyware, etc). The position includes hands-on involvement, technical project management skills, and acting as an escalation point for staff members.


This candidate must possess a wide range of technical skills relating to OS Deployment and support, VMware technologies, LAN/WAN troubleshooting, server hardware configurations.


Responsibilities will also include: 

 - VMware Support, design, configuration, deployment, and troubleshooting.

 - VMware system backup, monitoring and capacity planning

 - Amazon Web Services – Architecture and Support

 - Altiris Management Suite 7 and above

 - Scripting – PowerShell, PowerCLI

 - MS System Center Management Suite config and deployment

 - Application deployment, patch management and reporting

 - Symantec Anti-Virus and File Server management 

- Problem management and timely resolution from initial contact to closure. Tier-3 support - VMware server, connectivity, or related problems. 

- Proficient in scripting in PowerShell, PowerCLI and experience with open source tools like Packer, Vagrant, Terraform. 

- Creation of VMware policies and procedures. 

- Ensure procedures, standards, quality measures and documentation are defined, communicated, adhered to and managed appropriately. 

- Maintain a good relationship with customers while resolving their issues quickly. 

- Provide upper management with needed and relevant information. 

- Interact with Project Managers and the implementation team on various projects and services that will use VMware as a foundation. 

- Take a lead role in problem analysis and resolution during major service interruptions and outages. 

- Mentor and/or share knowledge with the entire technical support staff and team members. 

- Provide training and documentation to the Desktop Support team.




5+ years’ practical experience with Altiris 7.1 and SCCM 2007 or Newer

3-5 years’ experience supporting Public Cloud Services and Open Source (Packer, Vagrant, Puppet, Jenkins etc.)

3-5 years’ experience with Amazon Web Services

7-10 years’ experience implementing and configuring VMware - vDS Switches, Host Profiles, DRS, PowerCLI and all components - is mandatory, practical experience with VMware vSphere

VMware certifications required (VCP5, 6)

Experience writing scripts for administrative functions is a plus (PowerShell, PowerCLI, CloudFormation etc).

7-10 years Server and OS administration including:

      - Creation and execution of a backup and recovery plans

      - Windows 2008, 2012 & 2016 server builds

      - Operations documentation including startup/shutdown, backup and recovery procedures and more.

      - Scripting or Programming skills in PowerShell and .NET

5+ year’s LAN and WAN support and problem management.

5+ years of customer service, support, and/or consulting experience for enterprise-level customers.

Ability to work on-call 24/7 via company mobile and laptop as required.

Open to possible travel as and when requested by your Manager.

Ability to represent the company and your Manager in any confidentiality bestowed to you.

Require extremely strong communication skills and problem-solving ability.

Should be an organized self-starter and able to work effectively without direct supervision.
