The Associated Press seeks a news manager to lead ambitious coverage of public health and health policy at the state and local levels in the U.S. Reporting to the AP’s global Health & Science editor, this news editor will oversee a group of journalists covering public health, collaborate with AP’s U.S. bureaus to leverage its 50-state footprint, and direct collaborations with AP’s U.S. news organization members. This is a grant-funded position, lasting for at least two years.

 

Responsibilities: Based in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles or Washington, DC, this editor will help plan, develop and edit breaking news, enterprise and feature stories, both with AP journalists and with journalists in member newsrooms. In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with health journalists around the AP, particularly in Washington and those who cover health, medicine and research around the world, and you will lead collaboration with colleagues in U.S. news, particularly those covering state government. You’ll ensure that the AP is prepared to cover developments in health care and health policies, analyze implications of these policies, spot trends and hold officials accountable. You also will monitor other outlets for breaking news and trending topics around public health, finding opportunities to cover the public health angles of breaking stories.

 

Working closely with colleagues in Products and Revenue, you will talk frequently with customers to identify ways the AP can be a provider of content, as well as a partner who inspires innovation in their newsrooms. You’ll work with AP customers and members around the U.S. to share data and look for opportunities to collaborate on projects and stories. You should be eager to use metrics and social media to elevate stories.

 

Other duties:

  • edit and file spot news and enterprise around public health.
  • lead brainstorming and planning around public health projects or training for customers.
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate across formats and edit stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms. 
  • pursue innovative and inclusive journalism that maintains AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

 

Qualifications: We’re looking for an excellent text editor who is excited by the process of guiding spot news and enterprise stories to publication, and who enjoys helping reporters explore and probe complex topics – and then explain them in clear and compelling ways. You will have a demonstrated interest in health or medical topics, and a commitment to evidence-based journalism. Applicants should have at least three years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau, with some experience leading teams.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • The ability and willingness to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

 

The anticipated salary range for this position is $95,000 - $118,000 contingent on experience and other job-related factors.  Employees are eligible to participate, according to the terms of the official plan documents, in a 401(k) plan, employer-sponsored health insurance plan, and are eligible for paid time off and holidays in accordance with AP policy.
