More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.
The Associated Press seeks a social video and engagement producer to expand the reach of climate stories to digital consumers and news customers. In this role, you will use data to drive decisions on the production of impactful stories for digital and social platforms. The successful candidate will help the AP reach new audiences with content in all formats about how individual choices can affect the environment and impact the climate. This temporary staff position is covered by AP’s agreement with the News Media Guild and lasts for one year, with the possibility of extension.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the video editor of global beats and based in New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles or any U.S. city with an AP bureau, you will help to grow reader, viewer and online engagement around AP’s all-formats coverage of climate. You’ll work closely with a diverse team of journalists and across departments to highlight engaging content tailored for mobile, websites and other digital platforms.
We’re seeking a digital native journalist who can identify trending topics in climate and bring ideas to fruition by also producing and editing content in all formats for various platforms. The successful candidate does not need to be an expert in climate topics. You should have experience in reporting on complex subject matters and boiling them down into digestible, easy to understand content for general readers.

- have a strong understanding of audience needs, as well as an understanding of how to effectively plan and analyze metrics and make them actionable. Knowledge of tools that analyze metrics is preferred.
- have experience in vertical and traditional video production, including video editing and audio tracking. Experience with other popular digital platforms, such as podcasting or newsletter production, is preferred.
- have strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with the diverse team of journalists at the AP who operate in all formats (text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics) and serve as a liaison between the news and business departments.
- be able and willing to work at night and on weekends, as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects.
Preferred Qualifications: This social video and engagement producer should have at least two years of full-time journalism experience creating buzz around stories and defining and measuring success. Experience covering climate stories is a plus, and knowledge of video editing and social metric tools is preferred. Applicants must be able and willing to work any shift, including nights and weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.
