More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks an experienced journalist and newsroom leader to lead its coverage of Lebanon, Syria and Iraq as a news director, based in Beirut.

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Middle East News Director, this newsroom leader will drive coverage that is comprehensive and quick, consistently breaks news and is a source of distinct, richly reported enterprise in a highly competitive news environment. This successful candidate is a strategic leader in the Middle East and will collaborate with AP’s regional and global news leadership to set and execute AP’s strategy for coverage of major stories in the region. This includes Lebanon’s financial meltdown, the aftermath of Syria’s civil war, signs of a resurgence of the Islamic State militant group, and Iraq’s struggle to maneuver between Iran and the West. Working with the Middle East News Director, this newsroom manager will tend to the safety of AP staff in a region scarred by long-running conflicts. The news director will build newsroom-to-newsroom relationships with AP customers and work in concert with AP's Revenue and Products teams to meet client needs. The successful candidate must have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • work collaboratively and successfully as the leader of a diverse team of journalists who operate in all formats: text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics.
  • ensure the multi-format team consistently delivers spot news and enterprise coverage of Lebanon, Syria and Iraq that breaks news, has impact and is exclusive to AP.
  • be conversant in multi-format journalism and the crafting of a daily report that tells stories in multiple ways to serve AP's wide-ranging set of customers across the globe.
  • be fluent in social media platforms and have a demonstrated familiarity of how information moves around and is shared in Lebanon, Syria and Iraq and around the world.
  • pursue innovative coverage techniques while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

Qualifications: The Lebanon, Syria and Iraq News Director must have demonstrated excellence as a newsroom leader, with a deep record of innovation and successful change management, as well as guiding reporters, editors and producers to deliver stories about complex issues in a clear and engaging way. Applicants must be able to lead, guide, motivate and innovate inside a multi-format newsroom, and be able to coordinate and communicate with AP staffers throughout the company and AP customers worldwide. The successful candidate must be able to work effectively with colleagues and peers in teams and should have at least five years of full-time experience leading a beat team, department or newsroom at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Authorization to work in Lebanon will be mandatory.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English and Arabic.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats.
  • Demonstrated success in the organization and management of a large-scale beat team, newsroom or bureau.
  • History of leadership of journalists working in more than one format.
