More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks an experienced journalist and newsroom leader to direct its coverage of Greater China as news director, based in Beijing. Reporting to the Asia-Pacific news director, you will drive comprehensive cross-formats coverage in China (including Hong Kong and Macao), Taiwan and Mongolia that consistently breaks news, responds urgently to developing stories and is a source of distinct, richly reported enterprise in a highly competitive news environment.

Responsibilities: This news director is a strategic leader in AP’s Asia Pacific region and will collaborate with AP’s regional and global news leadership to drive news gathering and set and execute AP’s strategy for coverage of the territory. You will build newsroom-to-newsroom relationships with AP customers and work in concert with AP's Revenue and Products teams to meet client needs. This news director must have the ability and willingness to work at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate and drive stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms.
  • excel at planning and multi-tasking, with the ability to anticipate future coverage needs across a wide territory while pivoting quickly when news breaks.
  • pursue innovative and inclusive coverage that maintains AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

Qualifications: The news director for Greater China must have a deep record of successful change management, as well as experience guiding reporters, editors and producers to deliver stories about complex issues in a clear and engaging way. You must be able to coordinate, support, motivate and innovate inside a multi-format newsroom, and be able to connect and communicate with AP staffers throughout the company and with AP customers worldwide. Applicants should have at least five years of full-time experience leading a beat team, department or newsroom at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Authorization to work in China will be mandatory. Applicants not currently based in China should be prepared to start their employment elsewhere pending visa approval and should be able to articulate how they could temporarily lead the team remotely.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Advanced-level professional competency in written Chinese and spoken Mandarin is strongly preferred. Knowledge of other Chinese dialects is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
  • Employment is contingent on adhering to all company COVID-19 workplace safety policies and protocols, including providing proof of COVID-19 vaccination in accordance with applicable laws.
