Company: Associated Press

The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.

The Associated Press seeks a talented storyteller to cover Baltimore, a city that plays an important role in U.S. news and has been an early indicator of major social trends. This reporter will be comfortable cultivating sources from the city’s diverse neighborhoods to City Hall and federal courts to tell Baltimore’s story to the world through breaking news, excellent features and accountability journalism in multiple formats.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will stay on top of social justice, crime, policing and the city’s administration to produce distinct, deeply reported enterprise on one of the nation’s most historic and newsy cities. You should be a self-starter who is comfortable with freedom of information requests, and an active listener who can tell stories about people in underserved neighborhoods with sensitivity. You will take local issues and frame them for an international audience, while also working as a member of a multistate reporting staff who can jump on breaking news around the region in collaboration with other departments.

We’re looking for someone who will:

  • deliver spot news, features, accountability and enterprise.
  • write about complex topics in a way that can be easily understood and will resonate with diverse audiences around the world.
  • work with a diverse team of journalists to pitch stories across all formats – text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics – from a story’s inception to its publication.
  • have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate stories that people will want to share on social media.
  • pursue innovative and inclusive coverage strategies while maintaining AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.

Qualifications:

Applicants must be able to explain complex stories in clear and compelling ways and do so swiftly and accurately on tight deadlines. You should be comfortable working in multiple media formats, from the field and from the desk, reporting on breaking news as well as beat-driven enterprise. You must be able to work effectively as a member of a team and should have at least two years of full-time experience at a daily newspaper, broadcast station, online or digital news outlet, or an AP bureau or regional desk.

We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.

Other qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • All applicants must be able to work in the U.S. or be able to gain permission to do so.
  • Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English.
  • Professional competency in a language besides English is a plus.
  • Basic proficiency in using an iPhone for photos and video is required. Advanced proficiency is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
  • Employment is contingent on adhering to all company COVID-19 workplace safety policies and protocols, including providing proof of COVID-19 vaccination in accordance with applicable laws.

Application Deadline:  October 8, 2022 @ 11:59PM ET
