The Associated Press is an independent global news organization dedicated to factual reporting. Founded in 1846, AP today remains the most trusted source of fast, accurate, unbiased news in all formats and the essential provider of the technology and services vital to the news business. More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day.
Historically, African countries have contributed relatively little to climate change but frequently suffer some of the worst effects, such as heavy flooding and decades-long droughts. At the same time, Africa presents one of the greatest hopes to combat climate change, thanks to myriad climate-focused startups across the continent and workforces that are young, creative and entrepreneurial.
The Associated Press is seeking a reporter to illuminate for readers these realities in covering the vast beat of the clean energy transition in Africa, telling stories in all formats that help people understand and relate to the dramatic transformations taking place in many countries. Based in Senegal, South Africa or Kenya, the successful applicant will be able to break news with solid knowledge and good sourcing on energy issues and companies, from startups to utilities, working in the climate space.
We are looking for a storyteller: someone who can help translate smart, fact-based work on climate change, looking to inform people on the energy transition, what is working, what may not be, and what the future may hold. This reporter will be interested in clean energy developments and equity: the ability of people across geographies and income levels to access and use cleaner technologies. This is a temporary, grant-funded position ending February 1, 2027.
Responsibilities: As our green energy expert in Africa, you will work collaboratively with a dynamic team of climate journalists across the globe. You’ll build strong sources that keep AP ahead of the competition, generate original and compelling story ideas and harness social media to inform about the latest innovations on climate change. You will also approach each story across formats from beginning to end, and you'll work with other departments to deliver the best storytelling experience for AP’s global audience.
We’re looking for someone who will:
- deliver spot news, features, profiles and analysis.
- write about complex topics in a way that can be easily understood by broad audiences.
- be interested in stories that resonate with diverse audiences around the world.
- work with a diverse team of journalists to pitch stories across all formats – text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics – collaborating from a story’s inception to its publication.
- have a great news sense, with the ability to communicate and drive stories that people will want to share on social media and other platforms.
- pursue innovative and inclusive coverage that maintains AP’s standards for integrity and objectivity.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Advanced-level professional competency in written and spoken English. Knowledge of other languages spoken in Africa is a strong plus.
- Comfort with reporting on business in general, and energy and industry in particular.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and planning skills, with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines.
- Legal authorization to work in Senegal, South Africa or Kenya is mandatory.
Preferred Qualifications: This reporter will ideally have at least two years of full-time journalism experience, including familiarity with renewable energy issues and Africa, and a proven track record of identifying smart, innovative stories that people respond to. Applicants must be able and willing to work any shift, including nights and weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation.
We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role.
The application period will expire at 11:59pm on September 3, 2025.
AP seeks to build an inclusive organization grounded in respect for differences. We support all aspects of diversity and provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, marital status, national origin, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, status as a veteran, or other characteristic protected by law.
